A TROWBRIDGE woman, who suffers with cerebral palsy, worked up a sweat during a sponsored gym workout all in aid of raising money for Dorothy House who cared for her late friend.

Jayne Shelbourne of Summerleaze, who was in a wheelchair less than six years ago, carried out the charitable challenge last Wednesday at Castle Place Leisure Centre in memory of Hazel Sumner who died in March.

The 45-year-old said: “Hazel had some nurses from Dorothy House care for her and I wanted to give something back to them. I didn’t know she had cancer until after she had died but knowing she was cared for made me want to do something in her memory.

“She had it for a year and other than her close family I don't think anyone knew about it.

“After I raised money for Helping Harry by doing the sponsored swim, I knew I wanted to do something else and I thought I have never done a sponsored gym workout before so let’s do that.”

Ms Shelbourne, who took to the treadmill and cross trainer with the help of staff during the workout, has managed to raise thousands of pounds for charity in the last 10 years and hopes her latest endeavour proves just as successful.

“I started at Castle Place a couple of months ago and I have found it really does help with my cerebral palsy,” she added.

“After I got diagnosed, I had to spend 16 years in a wheelchair so being able to raise money and help people is just great.

“The workout was a challenge because it makes me do a bit more exercise which I was up for and while a lot of people may have given up, that didn’t stop me.

“The workout was definitely emotional and I was thinking of Hazel the whole time because it was hard work.”
