THE London-bound M4 between junctions 11 and 10 has now reopened after a pedestrian died in a crash involving a lorry early this morning.

The M4 was closed while Thames Valley Police investigated the circumstances of the crash, in which it is thought a woman died, just before 3am.

Police confirmed that the lorry driver was shocked but unhurt in the incident and have now appealed for witnesses.

Highways England at one point said it did not expect traffic to return to normal in the area until at least 3.15pm today but after 11.15am said the M4 was fully reopened at traffic delays were easing.

The closure between Junction 11 for Reading/A33 and Junction 10 for Wokingham/A329(M) meant that traffic was being diverted via the B3270 to Winnersh and A329M back to the M4.

Screens were put up at the crash scene but traffic was also queueing on the M4 heading west.

Drivers heading to London from Swindon were taking the A34 to Oxford and then the M40 to London or Heathrow Airport but there were delays on this route too.

Insp Andy Storey, from Thames Valley Roads Policing, said: "We would appeal to anyone who was driving on either the east or westbound carriageways of the M4 near Junction 11 at around 2.50am to contact police as we are trying to determine the circumstances which led to a pedestrian being on the motorway.

"In addition there are ongoing enquiries to identify the pedestrian at this time."

The road was closed for several hours as emergency services and the highways authority dealt with the incident.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact Thames Valley Police Roads Policing department at Three Mile Cross on 101.
