TROWBRIDGE Park is in the running to be crowned the best in the south west after being nominated for a national competition.

Over 200 local green spaces across the UK having been nominated in the Fields in Trust Awards which celebrate free, local outdoor spaces for sport, play and recreation.

Trowbridge Park was put forward by Danny Holton, 70, who lives in Hilperton, after hearing about the competition on the radio.

“They were saying that no park had been nominated from the Wiltshire area which I thought was a shame so I went on the website and had a look at what needed to be done to nominate Trowbridge Park,” he added.

“I think it is great that Trowbridge Park is the only one in Wiltshire that has been nominated and the next stage is the most important one because now we have to generate votes because there are 19 parks in the south west category alone.

“I only had 50 words to describe the park for the entry and so I tried to get in there how Trowbridge Park has a lot of facilities that accommodate for a lot of people so that’s what I tried to focus on.”

Trowbridge Town Council and the Tourist Information Centre are backing Mr Holton’s bid to see Trowbridge take the crown and now he hopes to call on the public’s support to help him as well.

“I think Trowbridge Park is a great park,” he said. “The bottom line of my application said that it was a place that suited all generations because you have the sensory garden, the war memorial, good public toilets, the band stand as well as green areas.

“There is good parking nearby and the park is well cared for.

“It would be great for Trowbridge to win not just for the town but for Wiltshire as well.”

Voting closes on November 9 at 5pm with the regional winners to be shortlisted and put in the running for the UK’s Best Park award at a ceremony at Lord’s Cricket Ground on November 30.
