POLICE have sent out a warning to enjoy Halloween responsibly after a Melksham woman discovered death threats on her windows and scratched into the back door of her block of flats.

Katrina Marchant, 36, of Gloucester Square, was horrified to find that someone had written ‘die’ on her bedroom and hallway windows, as well as scratching the word into a window at the rear of the flats.

“I got rid of what was written on my bedroom window after calling the police,” Miss Marchant said.

“There was also an X and a capital S written in the spot – X marks the spot doesn’t it? The police have said there is nothing they can do. I was told if a brick is thrown through my window then I should call them. I am just waiting to see what will happen next,” she added.

She is not sure if the incidents, which happened last Wednesday and Thursday night, were personal attacks or the work of mindless vandals.

Miss Marchant said: “The police called this morning, but again just said there isn’t really anything they can do. It is just frightening.”

Wiltshire Police have stepped up street patrols this week and Chief Constable Mike Veale is joining officers on the beat in a bid to tackle antisocial behaviour.

Chris Chammings, central Wiltshire Superintendent, said: “Central Wiltshire policing teams are planning a proportionate policing operation that will focus on reducing antisocial behaviour this Halloween.

“By deploying high visibility patrols in key areas we can provide reassurance to families taking part, while also reducing the impact on those who do not wish to be involved.”

A police spokesman said: “We have received two reports in relation to criminal damage at an address in Gloucester Road, which occurred late at night on October 20 and during the early hours of October 21. Officers would be keen to hear from any witnesses – if you saw or heard any suspicious activity in the area between 11pm and 4am, please call 101.

“Anyone who has concerns of suspicious activity should call 101, or if a crime is in progress, call 999.”
