A GENEALOGY business in Melksham has launched a new feature that allows people to upload dedications to their military ancestors.

Forces War Records in Challymead has launched a new dedication wall on its military genealogy website.

The wall allows people to post dedications to family members who fought in battle, as well as find long-lost ancestors who served in the military.

The brainchild of Neil White of Forces War Records, the dedication wall has already received over 2,000 entries since it was launched on November 2.

“My grandad fought in the Second World War and it was always very interesting to me," he said.

"I have always been very proud of his service and always liked to tell his story.

"I thought that if other people had ancestors then they would be interested in sharing their family members’ stories too,” he added.

The feature has already drawn users from across the globe, with people uploading dedications from as far afield as Australia.

Closer to home, Alan Williams from Shepton Mallet used the site to find out more information about his grandfather.

“After I worked with Forces War Records for a Harry Patch memorial in Wells I started to research my grandfather," he said.

"The website gave me quite a bit of information and I found out about his medals and his service.

"Sadly a lot of the records from that time were lost in the Blitz but I still managed to find out some information,” added Mr Williams of Whitstone Rise.
