CONCERNS have been raised over an uncovered water-filled well in a field near the Leighton Recreation Centre in Westbury.

Steve Hill was walking his Jack Russell named Mouse last week when he discovered the well, around 2.7 metres in depth, with deep water at the bottom.

He contacted Wiltshire Council but says nothing has been done about it.

“I walk my dog in that field regularly but this well has only just appeared; it must have been covered up before,” said the 42-year-old, who works as a school maintenance manager.

“My dog leaned over the edge and was about to jump in – luckily I called him back just in time.

“I looked down and quickly realised that if I had jumped in after him, I probably wouldn’t have been able to get out.

“I chucked a stone into the water and it sounded very deep. I really worry that a person or dog might fall in and be unable to get out.”

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said that as the well is on private land there is nothing the council can do about it.
