THE man who discovered vitamin C, Dr Albert Szent-Györgyi, once said: "Innovation is seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought."

A healthy dose of ingenuity courses through the veins of Westwood with Iford Primary School, which is never far from coming up with a new and exciting way to improve its pupils' education.

Not many schools have, or would even attempt to start up their own radio station, but Westwood Radio has been an enormous success, reaching listeners overseas after just a few months of shows.

Add this to the school's Big Write and blogging initiatives, read by people across the globe, and you have a budding pool of talented young writers, all of whom are at level four standard and above.

Headteacher Ian Rockey said: "This has had a monumental impact across the entire curriculum. The 17 people that are involved are naturals at it – it has been such a great addition to our school.

"What is so great about this is that it breeds confidence in people. It is not easy but they are learning the art of speaking clearly, doing good research, being prepared and thinking on your feet, which are very valuable life skills.

"It has also been beneficial to much of the school as they have also been involved with questions and interviews. This has inspired them to be even more creative.

“When I joined the school, a school in a rural location that works so well and embraces the local community, we wanted to put our school on the map, not just in Wiltshire but much further afield. Now we have an international audience, which is fantastic."

On top of the cross-curricular alterations that schools undergo, Westwood has more new projects afoot, such as a lunchtime darts club, with an emphasis on mental arithmetic, and plans for an outdoor learning area.

"We always like to mix learning with fun and that will be the case with the darts club which gets underway this week and will be run by myself," he said.

"The outdoor play area comes off the back of the Tesco grant we received, which can help towards an all-weather path which will be great for the kids."

Last March the school consolidated its positive work with another 'Good' rating, much to Mr Rockey's delight.

"Everything good that we have done has been recognised by Ofsted and now we can use that as a springboard to kick on and improve even more," he said.

"We never stand still here and we cannot afford to as we have to maximise the time the children have whilst learning here. I am blessed to have the team around that I do and I know we are going places."
