The Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) goes live in Trowbridge next Monday (January 23), banning the consumption of alcohol in public places within a designated area.

Below are some frequently asked questions to outline how it will work.

How does a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) differ from the Current Designated Public Place Order (DPPO)?
The current DPPO legislation has been replaced and all current orders will expire in October 2017 unless they are replaced with a PSPO. The DPPO requires the enforcing officer to have grounds to believe that the consumption of alcohol will lead to crime or disorder and the offence occurs when a person is asked to stop drinking and they do not. The PSPO makes it an offence to consume alcohol at any time within the area.

Am I able to drink alcohol within my own property that is within the boundary?
Yes the ban only applies to areas which has public access this includes shopping centres and parks.

Will the ban affect licensed events in the park?
No the order allows for the consumption of alcohol where either a license has been granted or permission provided in writing from Wiltshire Police.

What support is available for those with alcohol or drug related issues?
The Wiltshire Substance Misuse Service (WSMS) based in Trowbridge is there to support individuals with changes they want to make around alcohol and substance use. WSMS staff will be joining the Police on patrol for the inception of the order to ensure all of those who could be effected by the order are offered the appropriate help and support. For help or support contact WSMS on 01225 718980.

How was the area of the PSPO decided?
The area was based on calls to the police for alcohol related crime and anti-social behaviour. This was also extended as a result of a public consultation.

Will everyone who breaches the order be fined £1000?
No typically most will be issued with a fixed penalty notice for £100. However, for those who presently breach the order this will be used as evidence towards more formal measures such as injunctions.
