A LAST-GASP penalty denied Devizes Town all three points at home against Oldland Abbotonians as they had to settle for a 3-3 draw in the Toolstation First Division.

Darran Walters’ side roared out of the blocks at Nursteed Road and Rob Mitchell and Jamie Walters both struck in the opening six minutes, with the hosts retaining their two-goal cushion at the break.

However, Devizes’ hopes hit a setback five minutes after the restart when Jack Hopper was given his marching orders for two yellow cards in quick succession and Oldland were quick to capitalise, restoring parity on the scoreboard with 70 minutes on the clock.

Devizes refused to roll over, though, and they thought they had won it when Walters got his second of the game but they were pegged back again by an Oldland penalty five minutes from time.

Manager Darran Walters said: “I don’t know whether to be happy or sad.

“We were 2-0 up at half-time and in total control but when we got a player sent off, it totally changed the game. They got a foothold and got back into it.

“We did manage to get ourselves back in front but then we’ve been hit at the end by the penalty.

“I’m a little bit disappointed and I have to look at it as two points dropped because we had been in control for a large part of the game.

“I have got to take the positives out of it. We scored a couple of good goals and played really well in the first half. We have been struggling in front of goal of late and in four of the previous five games, we’ve drawn a blank.

“On Saturday, we go and score five goals but we also let in three at the other end – we just can’t win.

“Generally, I am happy with how things are going at the moment and I’d like us to try to get back into the top 10 before the end of the season, that would be a good achievement.”

Elsewhere, Chippenham Park claimed another stunning victory over high-flying opposition with a 2-1 victory at home to second-placed Keynsham Town.

Aaron Ledgister and Mark Nolan got the goals as Park came from behind to claim all three points, with Brett Partner’s side having also shocked leaders Wellington a fortnight ago.

Corsham Town and Malmesbury Victoria were both without fixtures at the weekend.
