CUMBERWELL Park's Laurie Canter grabbed the first day lead at the Dimension Data Pro-Am event in South Africa today.

Canter, who plays out of the Bradford on Avon club, carded a first-round 64 on the Outeniqua  course - one of three being used for the tournament - to head the star-studded Sunshine Tour event field in Fancourt.

The event, whch sees players play on the Outeniqua, Montagu and Links courses before Sunday's final round, also features former world number one star Lee Westwood and former Open champion Paul Lawrie but Canter, 26, outshone them all with a stunning back nine.

A slow start saw him drop a shot at the fifth hole but as he approached the hole, the 2017 European Tour member really kicked into gear.

Canter birdied the seventh, eight and ninth and added another at the 11th before playing the final five holes in five under par.

Birdies at the 14th and 15th were followed an eagle at the long 17th and another birdie on the final hole as he came home in 30 shots.

Canter told sunshinetour.com: "I'm really happy. This is my fourth time playing the Di Data and I've never actually broken par on the Outeniqua.

"I've always played a little better on the Montagu so I wanted to get after it today.

"I got off to a bit of a slow start but I got it going a bit at the end of the front nine and obviously I'm delighted to shoot 64.

"We're on the Links tomorrow. People are going to expect you to shoot better on the Outeniqua and you can get caught up with that but I'm just going to try and play my best every day and end up going into Sunday when everybody is on the same course.

"You've just got to be positive and take a few pins on, so I'll just free it up and just take it on this year I think.''

Canter's Cumberwell Park clubmate Steve Surry shot a level-par 72, also on the Outeniqua course.
