MUSICAL legends Chas & Dave have cancelled the only Wiltshire date on their 2017 tour because Chas Hodges has cancer of the oesophagus.

The 73-year-old was beginning treatment “immediately” after the illness was caught “at an early stage”, the band said in a Facebook post.

Chas & Dave were due to perform at Salisbury City Hall on Tuesday, March 2, but this will now be rearranged.

A spokesman said: "Chas has now begun his cancer treatment and has been advised to take a long rest period between treatment sessions.

"Unfortunately as a result of this we will also have to re-schedule all March dates apart from Blackheath on the 31st - which he should be ok for. The venues will advise on ticketing and refund options. Thank you for your understanding.

"Chas' treatment is going well and he's in high spirits.

"He'd like to take this opportunity to once again thank you all for your incredible support and good-will, and he's looking forward to getting back on the road soon once his cancer has 'slung its hook'."

“Apologies to ticket-holders for the inconvenience. The venues themselves will advise regarding re-scheduling/refunds,” the statement added.

The duo, famous for hits such as Gertcha and Rabbit, formed in the 1970s and are the creators of a musical style dubbed rockney – a mix of rock and cockney.
