A TROWBRIDGE couple who have shared 60 years of laughter marked their diamond wedding anniversary last week with a low-key celebration.

Terrick and Diane Meakin, of Cheverell Close, went for a meal with their two children to reflect on 60 years of marriage, having tied the knot at a church in Old Basford, Nottingham, in 1957.

They met at Aspley Cinema in Nottingham, where they had both watched Tembo, an American documentary that followed the travels of hunter Howard Hill through equatorial Africa, three years before marrying.

Mr Meakin, 84, said: “There aren’t too many who reach 60 years of marriage so it’s a nice feeling.

“We’ve both always respected each other’s passions in life and that’s very important in a marriage.

“My main passion is photography but Diane says it’s more of an obsession. Diane loves sewing and embroidery. We used to play a lot of darts and skittles together and still watch Eggheads every night.”

The couple moved from Nottingham to Bath in 1967 before moving to Trowbridge in 2001.

They have had two children together – Andrew, 53, and Joanne, 56 – as well as two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, with more on the way.

Mr Meakin worked as a youth leader before becoming a tool sales engineer and Mrs Meakin, 82, did a lot of charity work, working in a total of four different charity shops, ending up at British Heart Foundation.

Mrs Meakin said: “Of course we row as every couple does but the important thing is that we always make up afterwards.

“We know how to make each other laugh and that is very important in a marriage, otherwise you just vegetate."
