A CHARITY golf day will be taking place at Cumberwell Park in memory of a Westbury woman who died from cancer shortly before Christmas last year.

Gill Down, 46, wife of Kevin and mother of nine-year-old Hannah, died from bowel and lung cancer on December 22. Since then, Mr Down, 45, has been raising money for the charities which helped his wife during her illness.

To honour her memory, friends and acquaintances are coming together and taking part in a charity golf day, under the name of Mrs Downs’ Boys, at Cumberwell Golf Club in Bradford on Avon to raise money for Bath Cancer Unit and Dorothy House Hospice.

“So far we have 46 golfers and then we have even more booked for the meal in the evening. We wanted to do something for both charities. So many people are affected by cancer, whether it is themselves or someone close to them, and this is all about giving back,” Mr Down said.

“Gill died not long after her 46th birthday and then just a couple of days before Christmas, it was a bit of a kick I must say, especially with a nine-year-old daughter.”

Gill was first diagnosed with cancer in 2013 at the age of 43, during her treatment the family were helped by Dorothy House which supported them and offered counselling.

The last fundraising event Mr Down and his friends took part in was the Dorothy House Bath Men’s Walk on March 18 which saw his team of 13 walkers travel from the hospice in Winsley to Bath Rec.

“There were supposed to be 15 of us walking but sadly two had to drop out on the day. It was very good, we are still counting how much we raised at the moment as more funds are coming in, but the last time a figure was mentioned it was around £2,500 which is great. For the walk we were called Gill's Boys but now we are Mrs Down's Boys. There is still more space for the golf day so people should come along,” added Mr Down.

Applications to take part in the day are still available, costing £200 for a team of four. People can also enter the competition on their own for £50 each.

The entry fee includes 18-holes of golf followed by a two course dinner. Everyone is asked to get there for 11am to register which will then be followed by coffee and bacon rolls. People are also welcome to attend the dinner without playing golf for £20 each.
