THE sun shone on Sunday for Hartley Farm's spring open day.

There were a variety of family-friendly activities on offer at the farm in Winsley, including tractor rides, face painting and lots of opportunities to meet the animals.

The tractor rides proved to be the most popular, with queues so long that organisers had to put on an extra ride.

Sally Hulbert, deli supervisor at the farm shop, said: “It was a lovely day for families to spend time together in nice weather. It was a very popular event and we were busy all day.

“The children could learn things on the tractor ride, for example about certain breeds of cattle. There was a quiz afterwards about things that they had learnt on the tractor and on a walking route around the fields.

"Tom Bowles, the owner of the farm, also taught them about the animals that they saw.”

Animals on display included Saddleback piglets, Aberdeen Angus cows and horses. Calves, baby goats and a Shetland pony were brought in by farm education specialists Farm2Ewe.

The farm shop proved very popular, as did the food, cooked and served outside, which included veggie and halloumi kebabs and pork souvlaki with salad and pitta.
