CALNE’S Liam Dawson will reach the pinnacle of a professional cricketer’s career this morning when he takes to the field in England’s Test team at Lord’s.

Dawson made his Test debut last December in the final match of England’s series in India and new captain Joe Root has confirmed he will make his bow on home soil today in the series opener against South Africa.

Although the Hampshire all-rounder has now represented England in all formats at international level, featuring in a Test match at the home of cricket would top the lot.

“It’s really exciting to play a Test match at Lord’s, which is one of the best occasions for any professional cricketer,” said the 27-year-old former Goatacre player.

“It’s a special place to play cricket. Everyone that’s played there, no matter if it’s club cricket or professional cricket, there is always a special feel about the place.

“I am very excited.”

Dawson immediately looked comfortable at Test level, making an unbeaten 66 in his maiden innings in Chennai – although he was given a baptism of fire as he was struck on the helmet by a bouncer off just the second ball he faced.

“It’s hard, that’s why it’s called Test cricket,” said Dawson, who also claimed two wickets in the match.

“I’d like to think I can hold my own at this level and do what I do well. I am looking forward to it.

“I am very happy with the way I am bowling. I am short of runs, which is frustrating, but I have bowled well in all formats of cricket for Hampshire and that is the pleasing for me.

Dawson’s debut in Chennai was the last time England played a Test and there has been a significant change in the camp over the past seven months, with Root taking over as captain from Alistair Cook.

However, the former Goatacre player says the set-up still has a familiar feel to it and he is looking forward to an enthralling series against South Africa.

“There hasn’t been any Test cricket since December but the lads have been playing four-day cricket so everybody is ready,” said Dawson.

“I am sure Joe (Root) is excited as well to lead the team out in his first Test match as captain at Lord’s.

“It’s pretty much the same as what I experienced before, it’s a very relaxed environment which is enjoyable to be around.

“South Africa have always been a strong team and they have got some very dangerous players. Hopefully it’s a good series to watch and an exciting series to be involved in.”
