LAURIE Canter saved the best until last as he signed off the 146th Open Championship in style at Royal Birkdale this morning.
The 27-year-old, from the Cumberwell Park club in Bradford on Avon, carded a two-under-par round of 68 - his best of the week - to end the tournament on two over par in total.
With the leader Jordan Spieth yet to go out in the afternoon, Canter was one of the earlier starters this morning alongside American Kent Bulle and made an immediate impression on the leaderboard by birdieing his opening three holes to move to one over par for the tournament.
Although he subsequently dropped a shot at the fourth, the Wiltshire player still reached the turn in two-under-par 32 and started the back nine in similarly solid fashion with pars at 10 and 11.
A dropped shot at the short 12th slipped him back to three over but Canter, whose previous Open experience had seen him miss the cut at St Andrews as an amateur in 2010, birdied the long 17th to ensure he came home in 36.
