MELKSHAM Town boss Kieran Baggs hopes his side can ride a wave of early momentum after they made a storming start to their Toolstation League Premier Division campaign on Monday night.

The Oakfields men had shown promising signs despite being ousted from the FA Cup at the extra preliminary round stage 2-1 at Horndean on Saturday and delivered on it a little over 48 hours later as they crushed Cadbury Heath 4-0 in their league opener.

Gary Higdon's first-half penalty put the home side in front and a couple of second-half headers from Warren Maidment and Luke Ballinger stretched the advantage before Dan Demkiv smashed home the fourth to wrap up a routine three points.

Baggs, who took over following Darren Perrin's move into the chairman's role during the summer, was pleased to see things fall into place for his side after a tough pre-season and hopes they can work up a head of steam as they aim for another challenge for honours this season.

"Saturday was a disappointing result but the performance was good and we freshened up the side with five or six changes, rather than dropping any players (on Monday),'' said Baggs.

"With Dan Demkivs and Jake Brown I thought we had a lot of pace on the wings and they were changes that worked really well.

"It (Monday night) could have been a few more than four to be honest - it was a pretty routine performance.

"We won't get carried away. The club is going through a massive transition period and it will take time for the team to bed in.

"Pre-season has been really difficult. We played some pretty good teams, league teams (Swindon and Bristol Rovers), and we conceded a lot of goals so to get a clean sheet (against Cadbury Heath) probably pleased me more than the four goals.

"We'll be looking to build on that sort of performance. It's about getting off to a good start, riding that train until Christmas and then seeing where we are.''

Town have boosted by the dual-registration loan arrivals of Mark Cooper and Chris Allen from National League Chippenham Town - both of whom featured on Monday - and Baggs praised the Bluebirds for facilitating the deals.

"I have to thank Mark Collier (Chippenham boss) for sorting out the loans,'' he added.

"Hopefully it's a good situation for everyone. It's a great coup for Melksham. We get the quality of National League players in the side and the two players get some games under their belts.''
