FC CHIPPENHAM Ladies captain Chloe Giles says teamwork helped her side book their place in the third qualifying round of the Women’s FA Cup.

The midfielder watched her side fall behind in the second half at Stanley Park, but goals from Lily Withers and Caitlin Brooks meant a turnaround in fortunes as the hosts claimed a 2-1 win over Bournemouth Sports.

Giles says she was elated that the club, who are involved in the FA Cup for the first time in their history, had made it to the second qualifying round, let alone make it to the third.

“Sunday was unbelievable again, the girls showed a lot of strength mentally because we have gone a goal down in our last three games,” she said.

“It’s mentally encouraging to show that we can come back and win games. Last season we wouldn’t have been able to do that.

“We also had to change our formation within about 20 minutes of the game, due to an injury, so the girls adapted to that really well too.

“It wasn’t something that we spent a time changing on, we went from 3-5-2 to 4-5-1.”

The skipper admits the two sides were evenly matched, but recognises the hosts just had an edge which allowed them to secure their spot in the next round.

“We were pretty even, I think both goalkeepers kept the teams in the game, especially towards the end of the first half because both teams were going for it,” she added.

“In the second half we went 1-0 down, and then it was just down to how hard the midfield and strikers worked as a team to drive forward.

“I didn’t expect us to get past the first game and now we have managed to get past the second one too. We are the underdogs really.”

Manager Adam Henry will now turn his attention to their next opponents, Basingstoke Town, who they face at home in the third qualifying round on Sunday, October 8.

“We are really pleased with the draw, especially with the home support which is always nice to have you home town supporting us,” added Giles.
