A FIRE cadet programme for young people in Trowbridge has been launched at the town’s fire station.

The programme, which follows the National Fire Cadet Model, is about to embark on its fourth week with 15 young people taking part. A further cadet programme has also been launched at Swindon Fire station.

District commander Guy Tadman said: “Expanding on our Community Engagement work within Prevention, we are very proud to offer 15 local young people the chance to become fire cadets and earn a variety of accreditation at the end of their year at Trowbridge Fire Station.”

The National Fire Cadets’ mission statement is: “Open to all, we empower individuals to reach their full potential through a fun and progressive programme that delivers social action and skills development, contributing to safer, stronger and healthier communities”.

Young people aged 12 to 18 are trained in operational skills such as water rescue, breathing apparatus, road traffic collisions and casualty extrication.

Cadets also develop life skills and have an opportunity to gain a BTEC Level 2 Award in Fire & Rescue Services in the Community, as well as a National Fire Cadet Level 1 Certificate.

Christine Sharma, Youth Intervention Co-ordinator for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The cadets have undergone a rigorous selection process but are settling well and are really getting to know each other.

“Over 38 weeks they will be supported and empowered with various personal development opportunities. In addition to operational procedures, they will learn about other functions within the service including Prevention and Protection and other corporate roles.

“They will also harness a number of transferable skills such as communication, team working, problem solving and leadership whilst working towards their qualifications.”

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is always looking for support in terms of volunteers or sponsors to help with the running of the programme so if you would like any more information, please get in touch with Christine Sharma on 07771 594981 or email christine.sharma@dwfire.org.uk
