MR Pawsey’s letter last week regarding the signing of diversions 20 miles away is simply incorrect.
It is a statutory requirement that when creating a diversion for a road the diversion has to use the same category of road.
Local car drivers will always know the local routes around any problem and will use these.
Wiltshire Council diversions are specifically targeted on long distance drivers, particularly HGVs.
In the case in question, the A303, the only alternative routes for HGVs in an east/west route is either the A4 or the M4 in the north, the A30 from the south.
All a considerable distance away from the A303.
Otherwise HGVs arrive three miles away from a closed route and then re-route through our small Wiltshire villages on unsuitable roads, causing chaos.
Hence the diversions for the A303 being 20 miles away – a simple solution.
