CALNE Town were able to bring their five-match losing streak to an end with a 2-0 win over Malmesbury Victoria in the Wiltshire Senior Cup on Tuesday.

Having last tasted victory over five weeks previously, goals from Jamal Chevolleau and Stuart Windsor meant they progressed to the next round of the competition on Tuesday night.

The Lilywhites had lost 2-1 to their Toolstation League First Division rivals at the end of last month, but the midweek result was a third defeat in a row for Malmesbury.

Calne’s joint-manager Ben Redford admits it was a relief to see his side win and praised his team for a polished performance.

“The win was much needed and I think the break (from league action) at the weekend would have done us some good,” he said.

“Before the game everyone was down because of the defeats. We just haven’t been able to take our chances.

“We had a chat and we told them to play with confidence, without fear and to cut out the mistakes, if we did that then the results would come along.”

Wiltshire League Premier Division side Bremhill FC sprung the surprise of the first round as they ousted Toolstation League First Division second-placed side Devizes Town 3-1 after extra time at Nursteed Road.

Alex Pippard, Alfie Mahon, Edward Cooke netted for the underdogs Premier Division side Melksham Town were also in action, as they swept Mere Town aside 5-0 in their Wiltshire Senior Cup clash at Oakfields on Monday evening.

Keiran Baggs’ side rushed into a 3-0 lead in the first half, Oliver Webb and Joe Stradling both notching within the first six minutes, before Gary Higdon added a third in the 22nd minute.

In the second half, Stradling was on target again to make it four, as Tyler Sibbick sealed the win before the hour mark to complete a comprehensive home triumph.

Royal Wootton Bassett were due to play host to Cricklade Town in their cup tie in midweek, while Corsham Town faced a short trip to Hellenic League Pewsey Vale.

Wiltshire League’s Marlborough Town faced a daunting trip away to Toolstation Division One pacesetters Westbury United.
