A SIGNIFICANT chapter in the life of John Harding has come to an end after he completed his final shift at Wiltshire Council to end 58 years of service there.

Mr Harding, who joined the authority at the age of 16 in 1959, waved farewell to his workplace for the last time on Thursday, with a mixture of sorrow and happiness.

But after nearly six decades of working there as a junior clerk, a draftsman and finally a development control engineer, the 74-year-old said the time was right to retire and start a whole new chapter of his life.

“I never thought I would work at Wiltshire Council, let alone stay here for my whole working life – it has been quite a ride,” said Mr Harding, who lives in Frome.

“To be honest, I am not sure what drew me to the place.

“When I left the old Trowbridge Boys High School, which is now John of Gaunt, everyone was expected to walk into a job, unlike today.

“I was on the vast sum of £240 a year, which even then did not seem like much. When I started out I was collecting the post and filing it. We had one copy machine for the whole of County Hall, which seems incredible when you think about how things are today.

“I learnt an awful lot over the years, met some fantastic, hard-working people and did my best to help the people of Wiltshire. People say it is not just the place of work, it is the people you work with, but it is the right time to go.

“I used to drum in the past so I think I might pick that up again. I have a keen interest in sailing, and I would like to travel a bit more and also spend time with my family.”

Mr Harding, who was born in Westbury, was quick to pay tribute to his former employers.

“I want to thank everyone who helped me along the way. I do not think workers at Wiltshire Council get enough credit for the work they do in aid of the county,” said Mr Harding, who is married with five children and three grandchildren.

“Jane Scott has transformed the council into an organisation that other local authorities would be envious of.

“I am hesitant to say I am the longest-serving employee, as I would not be surprised if someone pops up saying they have done two days more than me. I am certainly a contender though.”
