BUILDERS took matters into their own hands to try and put out a fire that started in a building site just behind the Wiltshire Times’ office in Trowbridge on Thursday morning.
Fire crews who got a call just before 8.30am arrived at the unfinished flats off Roundstone Street and found workers trying to put out the flames and smoke themselves.
Two crew from Trowbridge, one from Melksham and another from Westbury eventually put the fire out using several hose reels and breathing apparatus, after it spread to the roof and cavity of the building.
Trowbridge watch manager Neil Hiscock said the cause was being investigated and nobody was hurt. It is not known how the fire started.
Roundstone Street was opened again after 11am.
