HUNDREDS of shepherds, sheep and angels gathered in Warminster park on Wednesday (December 6) when the town attempted to break the Guinness world record for the largest live nativity.

Organised by the 1st Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, the event got the community of Warminster together to show their support, but despite their efforts, the town were unable to claim the title from Calne, who set the bar high with over 1200 people taking part in their world record attempt last year.

However spirits remained high all evening and the live nativity went ahead.

Organiser and former welfare officer at the Yorkshire Regiment David Lent said: “We wanted to organise this event as a way of getting Warminster on the map, as well as bringing everyone together at this festive time.”

When the final count took place, it was announced that just over 500 people had turned out in their weird and wonderful and costumes, many of which were homemade.

John Pomeroy, who was dressed as a shepherd showed other shepherds how the beard should be done, while many others sported woollen or fabric alternatives.

He said: “This is such a fantastic thing to do for our community, and I have never seen so many shepherds in my whole life.

“Although my beard is definitely the most natural.”

Mr Lent’s wife, Ali, supported her husband's event and came along with friends dressed as angles.

Mrs Lent said: “It’s so amazing that so many people have come out for this today.

“It so much to see the community of Warminster come together like this.”

Charlie, the famous donkey who has been on Strictly Come Dancing made an appearance and was certainly not short of attention from both the children and adults as he posed for photographs.

Many people shared their support on social media.

Kay Dobson-Bennett said: “Shame it wasn’t achieved as it all looked so good, well done everyone for trying.”

Andy Gale said: “Great turn out. Well done.
