A FORMER architecture student, who gained a reputation at university for making cakes, has opened his own shop.

David Waldren, 23, was known as The Cake Architect while studying at Brighton University.

He began making cakes, combining his flair for design and structure with a technical eye for detail.

“I used to make cakes for the other students to raise the money for our degree show,” he said.

“The name kind of stuck, and now I have opened a shop in Bradford on Avon called The Cake Architect.”

David was born in Plymouth but moved to Bradford on Avon at the age of 11 and went to St Laurence School.

After leaving school, he studied a three-year BA degree in architecture at Brighton, graduating last summer.

“I always knew that I wouldn’t work as an architect,” he said. “I wanted to do something that I enjoy.

“Work is always easier if you love doing what you do and I enjoy making and decorating cakes.”

David works at the back of his open-plan premises in Silver Street baking and decorating his cakes.

He specialises in wedding, birthday and celebration cakes and cup cakes, and has been inundated with bespoke orders since opening on November 25.

In 2016 David won a silver award at the Cake International competition for his sculpted unicorn bust cake.

In the same year he made it to the finals of The Great Vegan Bake-Off with his salted caramel cupcakes.

The Cake Architect offers a range of vegan and allergen-free cakes that never compromise on flavour.

David said: “We provide cakes for every occasion, from the most elegant bespoke wedding cake to a lifelike sculpture or even a delicious cupcake on the go.

“What makes The Cake Architect unique is our balance of technical design expertise and fresh creativity.

“No cake is too big or too small; we pride ourselves on working with our customers to create the perfect cake for their celebration.”

David also has one special advance order to complete for his fiancee, Esther, who lives with him above the shop.

He will be making and decorating a special cake to celebrate their wedding during the August Bank Holiday next year.
