THE hard work of a group of Chippenham volunteers who help protect a popular wildlife haven will be celebrated at the Wiltshire Life Awards.

The Baydon's Meadow Wildlife Group has been shortlisted for the Conservation Project of the Year at the awards, which will be held in Swindon in March, for their work in transforming the once overgrown piece of land near the River Avon into a bustling wildlife haven.

Volunteers from the group meet every month to carry out hedge-laying, coppicing, raking and mowing and every year they plant hundreds of new flowers.

Chairman Julia Brotherton said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this major award. It’s a tribute to the hard work, dedication and commitment of our volunteers who attend work parties throughout the year, come rain or shine.

“Their reward comes in the ever-increasing number of wildflowers and the appreciation of the local community who enjoy walking through the meadow. It is a wonderful spot to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature and we are so lucky to have this piece of countryside on our doorstep."

The group, who are celebrating 15 years next year are looking for more volunteers to help preserve the future of the area. For more information call 01249 654608 or visit www.baydonsmeadow.org.uk
