THE bridge over the River Avon in Dauntsey has been decorated in a colourful knitting display to help raise money for homelessness charity Doorway.

Serial knitter Lesley Webb opted to yarn bomb the bridge near her house in Dauntsey at the start of last month after her previous displays gathered quite a lot of local attention.

"This started off as a small thing where I used to decorate my gate but people started to stop and it caused a bit of traffic, so this year I decided to get permission from the parish council to decorate the bridge over the River Avon," Mrs Webb, who is also on the fundraising committee for the homelessness charity, said:

"The bridge is right next to our house so my friend Therese Dymott and I spent a week sewing the 11 pieces together, which include the 12 days of Christmas and a nativity scene, so that we could put them up on the bridge. Some of the pieces have been made by other people over the years but all the bits around the railings are from me.

"Homelessness has become quite a big problem and people become very aware of it at this time of year so I thought it would be good to raise some money for the charity. Unfortunately not many people seem to be texting in to donate but if it makes someone smile and raise awareness about the charity, it's doing a good job."
