THE River Avon has flooded by the B3107 Bradford Road after 20mm of rain fell overnight in the area.

Fields by the river have already flooded and as the water level continues to rise water is expected to cover more of the road which leads to Farmers Roundabout near Melksham.

A statement issued by the national Flood Information Service at 9.06am this morning said: “Up to 20mm has fallen over the last 24 hours and levels on the River Avon are rising in response to the rainfall.

"While lighter rainfall totals are expected today the River Avon at Great Somerford continues to rise and is currently expected to peak around midday today. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates where necessary.”

The road remains open but the flood is expected to impact on driving conditions.

There has also been flooding just outside Lacock village, with fields surrounding Lacock Abbey covered in water overnight.
