THE man who founded a young people's charity to help homeless and unemployed youngsters in crisis to positively transform their lives, has been awarded an OBE in this year's New Year's Honours List.

Barty Smith founded the Amber Foundation 23 years ago after noticing a need for a place where young people could rebuild their self-belief and help them find a positive direction and focus for their future.

The Amber Foundation, which has a branch in Trowbridge, gives young people in crisis a safe, temporary home whilst supporting them to develop the skills needed for independent living and employment.

Mr Smith, said: "I am very pleased to receive this award and it is fantastic that the work of the Amber Foundation has been nationally recognised.

"I have always felt that by having fun and building self-esteem and confidence, people see the world differently and see the opportunities that have always been there."
