Tony Guppy

There have been many tributes to Tony Guppy, 75, who lived in Royal Wootton Bassett for more than 40 years and was a gifted chemistry teacher at Churchfields School, Swindon from 1974-2000. He was also a private tutor who helped many students to achieve their academic potential. He continued coaching until last year, and his encouragement and expertise benefited hundreds of young people.

Tony was noted for his sparkling sense of humour and his kind, gentle, caring nature. He was proud to be Welsh and was a graduate of the University of Aberystwyth. He worked as a research chemist in Bristol before switching career and following his vocation in teaching.

It was during Tony's time in Bristol that he first met his wife Jane, who was a nurse. They were married at Easter 1971 and have a son Owen, daughter Laura, three grandsons and a granddaughter.

Tony began his teaching career in Huntingdon before moving to Wiltshire. He was devoted to his family, enjoyed his work and his hobbies, including golf and classic cars, of which a Morris Minor was a pride and joy.

Tony's many interests were shared with a wide circle of friends and his beloved family. The funeral service at St Bartholomew's Church, Royal Wootton Bassett, was led by the Rev Canon Jane Curtis and Mr Andrew Fleet. Cremation followed, at Kingsdown.

Everyone was welcomed at the Angel Hotel in Royal Wootton Bassett, to share refreshments and further reminiscences.
