RESIDENTS of Melksham have gone to the polls today to elect a new town councillor for the vacant South Ward seat following the tragic death of Cllr Andy Hinchcliffe last year.

Four candidates are contesting the seat in the local election. They are Vanessa Fiorelli (Liberal Democrat Party); Judith Gradwell (Labour Party); Bruce Malcolm Petty (independent); and Matthew James Snook (Conservative Party).

Cllr Andy Hinchcliffe, 68, represented Melksham South Ward for the Liberal Democrats. He died on September 27 2017 after several years of ill-health.

Voting will take place between 7am and 10pm in three polling stations at The Canberra Centre in Spa Road, Aloeric School in St Michael's Road, and at Queensway Hall in Queensway.

The result is likely to be declared later this evening following the count.
