A TROWBRIDGE man is preparing for a boxing match which he hopes will raise awareness of a rare genetic disease that the person he cares for has and raise some money for charity too.

For the last eight years Dan Murphy has worked as a carer for Matt Godfrey, of Warminster, who has Tuberous sclerosis complex - a disease that causes benign tumours to grow on the body’s vital organs.

Several times a week, the two 29-year-olds go to Larkrise Community Farm, learn at Wiltshire College together and do all sorts of fun sports and activities.

Such is the tight-knit bond that the two share, Mr Murphy has signed up to do an Ultra White Collar Boxing Match at the Bath Pavilion on April 14 to raise funds for the Tuberous Sclerosis Association and to make Mr Godfrey proud.

“Matty is such an inspiration to me. I want to raise as much as I can for the charity and make him proud,” said Mr Murphy, who works for Care Choice.

“We have such a close bond. We do farm work at Larkrise, we canoe together, go the gym, do horse riding - he is a really busy and happy lad. He can do stuff on his own and sometimes he needs me to help out a bit.

“One of my friends told me about this and I thought I’d give it a go. I am training at the Contender Gym in Melksham with a great team of guys.

“White Collar Boxing involves people who have never boxed before and you have to raise some money for charity. I just hope I do Matty proud.”

Mr Godfrey’s mum, Yolanda, said: “We have two very special boys fighting two very different fights. He is more like a great friend to him, rather than a carer.”
