IT is looking increasingly likely the Christie Miller Sports Centre in Melksham could close before its facilities, services and activities are provided elsewhere.

Although there is no set date yet for its closure, Wiltshire Council is reviewing its options to relocate some or all of the facilities, services and activities available.

But it’s possible the centre could close without the council being able to provide them at other sports and leisure centres in the area.

One user of the Christie Miller facilities said they have not been told if and when the centre might close and whether they would need to relocate their training sessions.

Andrew Tombling, who runs TaeKwonDo Association of Great Britain classes at the centre, said: “I would just like to know if they are going to close.

“It would be better if they were to just make a decision and get on with it so that people know exactly where they are.”

Mr Tombling regularly trains around 70 enthusiasts aged four to 54 a week at the centre at his two Thursday evening classes.

Christie Miller offers a wide range of facilities and activities, including a gym, sports hall, squash courts, classes, indoor climbing wall, indoor bowls and much more.

A Wiltshire Council spokesperson told a Melksham Area Board meeting last week: “Given the cost to maintain the Christie Miller centre and the risks associated to ensure that it is fit for purpose for public use, it is possible that the centre will close ahead of the new provision being in place. Possible re-provision of some facilities is being looked at and more detail will be available in due course.”

Last week, Wiltshire Council said it could give no timescales for the centre’s closure and which of the many services and activities it provides will be found a new home.

Christie Miller operators, Places for People Leisure, said they are supporting Wiltshire Council’s review of its facilities and services to see if and where they can be relocated.

Details of the services and activities on offer, whether all or some can be relocated, and whether other sports and leisure centres would have the capacity to accommodate them, would all form part of the review, the company said.

Spokesperson Katie Mason said: “Wiltshire Council is currently reviewing the cost to keep Christie Miller Sports Centre operational whilst the new Melksham Campus is delivered.

“This will include looking at all available and affordable options for the re-provision of some of the services for the interim period whilst the new facilities are built.

“Work on the review is under way and as an operational partner, Places for People Leisure will support Wiltshire Council where required during the process.

“At this stage no decision has been made regarding the closure of Christie Miller, or the options for re-providing services and facilities.”

A Wiltshire Council spokesperson said their review would “look at all the options” including relocating some or all of the services to other sports centres locally.

“We are looking at the possibly re-providing the facilities elsewhere but no decision has been made yet. We are gathering all the data we need to see what the options are.”
