PLANS to install flood gates on roads between Staverton and Holt received a boost thanks to a £2458 grant from Trowbridge Area Board.

Councillors agreed to provide the funds towards the £10,000 project, which aims to stop reckless drivers from getting stuck in floodwater, particularly along the B3106.

This grant was matched by Bradford on Avon area board, meaning the scheme is now half way towards its target.

The original plan was to install four gates, costing between £20,000 and £25,000, but these plans were scaled back because of a lack of funds.

Instead, two gates will potentially be installed at both ends of the B3106 Holt Lane, along with diversion signs.

Cllr Stewart Palmen said: “This is a troublesome problem and needs to be addressed. It is good that we can support this.”

Wiltshire Council, the Environment Agency and Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service have all said they cannot afford to contribute to the scheme.
