A SIXTH former from Matravers represented the school in the finals of the national Big Bang competition in Birmingham, competing to become British Young Engineer of the Year.

Callum Langley was one of just 200 students from across the country to make it to the final, after engineering a small, remote-controlled submarine which he designed and built while on placement at the University of Bath, working alongside post-graduate students.

The submarine is capable of carrying sonar imaging equipment which will allow the operator to record under water images to a depth of 300 metres.

Callum designed his small, affordable, agile drone for a wide range of industrial and scientific applications.

His work was highly commended and appreciated by representatives of many businesses. He plans to continue to study engineering at university once he completes his A-levels.
