TROWBRIDGE park and the bridge leading to Tesco have been cordoned off by police after a man was attacked during the night.
Police are guarding the scene in the park and at the bridge and forensic officers have been carrying out a search of the area and taking swabs.
There were rumours that a man had been stabbed but it is now understood a knife was not involved in the beating.
A Wiltshire police officer said a man received serious head injuries in the attack which happened during the early hours. Splatters of blood can be seen on the footbridge.
