AFTER moving up to second in the Toolstation League Premier division, Melksham Town boss Kieran Baggs says his boys will remain underdogs for the remainder of this season.

Fellow Wiltshire side and promotion rivals Bradford Town dropped out of the top two after they were 3-1 losers to Chipping Sodbury at the weekend.

Melksham’s 1-0 win away to Hengrove Athletic was their first clean sheet in seven league games, while Rob Hobbs notched his third goal since joining the club in the winter.

While Baggs was delighted with Bradford’s slip up, he says there is plenty still to do and admits Melksham have a fierce run of fixtures until the end of the season.

“You can only really look after yourselves. Obviously, you know who the teams around you are playing and what their fixtures are,” he said.

“There is no point fantasising or obsessing over what you want to happen with someone else’s results.

“You just want to focus on yourself and if someone else can do you a favour that is great, Chipping Sodbury did us one at the weekend.

“Willand Rovers won their game. I would still say that we are going to be underdogs with the run in that we have because ours is the hardest.

“We can only take it one game at a time. Hopefully Buckland Athletic can do us a favour when they play Willand.

“As you can see, one or two bad results can flick everything on its head and that can still happen to us.

“We are on a good run at the moment, but that can change drastically.”

Manager Baggs said the performance was far from typical, as Melksham were forced to work for their rewards.

“The performance was a different one to the one that we normally produce. It was a really gritty performance,” he added.

“Any manager, player or supporter knows, when you go down to Hengrove the set up is one of those old school football grounds.

“The pitch was bobbly and the conditions were terrible so we had to grind out a win. We were worthy winners at the end of the game.”

Melksham now turn their attention to Good Friday’s local derby with promotion rivals Bradford Town at Oakfields Stadium.
