PRESSURE is mounting on the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency to have more examiners working at the Trowbridge test centre to reduce waiting times or to get a permanent site for this in the town.

Self-employed instructor Steve Dayman-Johns, Shamrock driving instructor Gary Fossey and MP Andrew Murrison are meeting in June to talk about trying to reduce the three to four month exam waiting times affecting Trowbridge’s learner drivers.

The driving instructors say that the waiting period for people to take a test in Trowbridge, where the test centre is open on Monday and Tuesday, could be cut be cut by a third if an extra examiner is brought in.

But all parties would like to see a five-day a week test centre in the town.

“Two days a week is not enough. We want them to come clean on what is going to happen and why they are so reluctant to do as we ask,” said Mr Dayman Johns.

“If they pull over an extra instructor from Chippenham, which has far less of a wait, it will help Trowbridge so much and impact Chippenham ever so slightly.”

Dr Murrison said: “I find it strange that a town of more than 30,000 does not have a permanent test centre. We need to work with the Department of Transport to see if we have an inferior service than elsewhere and to try and bridge the gap.”

Mr Fossey added: “I am encouraged that we are coming together to address this issue.”

Richard Hennessy, DVSA Director of Operations: “DVSA is considering ways to improve access, but has yet to identify a solution which could bring a standardised driving test to all candidates.”
