TROWBRIDGE schoolchildren were the stars of the show at an annual lunch as part of Christian Aid Week.

The Hunger Lunch, which has been a regular event in the county town for more than 40 years, featured the Newtown Primary School choir and Oasis Academy Longmeadow pupils who waited on the 80 or so guests at St James Church Hall on Thursday.

Newtown Year 6 pupil, Molly, said: "This is a really good event for a very good cause. We sang seven songs for the people here. I have done this three times now and every time it gets a bit easier.

Mia, from Year 4, added: "I think they enjoyed our singing. It was fun to take part in this."

This year, Christian Aid Week, May 13-19, is highlighting the plight of more than 40 million people around the world who are displaced within their own countries, particularly Haiti, which has been on the receiving end of devastating earthquakes and hurricanes.

Oasis pupils Ebony, Ola, Luke and Lewis also did their bit by serving those present with food and drinks.

Ebony, Year 5, said: "The four of us have been serving people, it has been really good fun. Everyone is having a good time."

Ola, Year 5, said: "I enjoyed doing this but I like helping people. It has been really nice to meet all of these people. I would like to come back and do this again."

There was also home made cakes and jam, fairtrade goods, bric-a-brac and books for people to enjoy on the day.

Christian Aid coordinator, Gill Lee, said: "We want to thank everyone who made this possible, including both schools, Asda, Sainsbury's, S.K Fruits, Tesco and Traidcraft. All the proceeds from this will go to Christian Aid to help Haiti. The singers were superb, the Oasis kids were very helpful and everyone really enjoyed themselves.

"This is an annual event and each time it goes down really well."
