HUNDREDS of people were given a royal welcome for the 10th edition of the Keevil scarecrow trail this weekend.

Former England Rugby star, Matt Perry, opened the annual Keevil Academy event, which this year had two themes: The Royal Wedding and Lego creations too.

A total of 40 royal scarecrows, such as Henry VIII, Harry and Meghan, and Queen Elsa of Frozen, among others, were dotted around Keevil, courtesy of families from the village.

On top of that, children and teachers made 20 Lego creations, that were next to some of the royal scarecrows, to make it even more of a community effort.

Co-chairman of the Friends of Keevil Academy, Freya Merchant, said: “We were delighted with how well it went. Everyone had a really good time and the amount of effort people put into the scarecrows was really impressive.

“The children also made little Lego creations which went nicely with the scarecrows.

“There was a lot of excitement beforehand and I am very happy people went home happy.

“There were hundreds of people who came along over the two days and it was really nice to show the royal wedding on a screen at the Academy, that went down well.

“On the Sunday, some parents who are chefs cooked for us too which was lovely.

“It was very nice of Mr Perry to come down and open the trail for us - he is a friend of someone at the school.”

Now that the dust has settled, Freya says that more than £10,000 has been raised for the academy.

“We are still totting up the numbers but it will be over the £10,000 mark. Last year we raised over £11,000 for the academy,” she said.

“I want to thank our sponsors FX Mortgages in Trowbridge and other companies for donating prizes.

“I also want to thank everyone who helped make this possible because it was a real team effort. We decided a date and a theme a long time ago and I am very glad it all came together nicely.

“It was a great way to mark the scarecrow trail’s 10th anniversary.”

Deputy headteacher, Lindsey Herman, thanked everyone for their support.

"I was immensely pleased with how well it went and we are so grateful that everyone chipped in to make it a success," she said.

"There was a wonderful atmosphere around the school and the village and this has helped us to raise a significant amount to enhance what the academy does."
