MUSIC and sport came together at Staverton Primary for a special day of creativity courtesy of a fun rock band.

Andy Hawkings and Tom Veck of Rocktopus, a band for kids and families, brought their Rock the Sport workshop to the school on Friday to get the children's help on creating five P.E. related songs.

Everyone came together to write a Staverton Primary anthem that includes chants for all of the school's houses - and it proved to be a hugely enjoyable day for all.

Year 4 pupil, Holly, said: "Today was really fun. The song we made is really good. I really enjoyed the bit where we danced about and then had to balance on certain body parts."

The school's houses then came together at the end of the day to show their song to finish off the album.

Mr Hawkings said: "Funding for music in schools has been cut which is a real shame but each year schools get £16,000 a year to spend on sport and P.E so we thought we would marry to two together."

"During our Rock The Sport sessions, we see children engage with P.E. in a completely different way," said Mr Veck.

"Children who are sometimes reluctant to participate contribute a lyric for their song and suddenly they want to move around to it without inhibitions."
