MEERKATS and racing snails proved to be among the biggest draws at the annual Fitzmaurice Strawberry Fair on Saturday.
They were among the main new attractions at this year’s event, which raised more than £5,000 for school funds.
Emma Macquarrie, chairman of the Fitz Friends, the Fitzmaurice School Association, said torrential rain during the afternoon failed to dampen the spirits or enthusiasm of those taking part.
“It felt like we had all four seasons, with sun, wind and torrential rain after midday.
“It’s not just about raising funds but a way of bringing the community together,” she said.
Hundreds of local families attended the annual event, now in its 12th year, in the school grounds.
They were entertained by the members of the school’s Rock It dance club and choir clubs.
Pupils also staged a non-uniform day on Friday to raise funds for the tombola stall prizes.
Inflatables, a bungee trampoline and an assault course were just some of the attractions, plus a visiting group of meerkats .Family favourites included the strawberry splat, games, a host of stalls, a tombola and a raffle.
Other attractions featured the Bradford on Avon Fire Service, the Cafe Yum Yum, a disco dome and a washing line of prizes donated by local businesses.
There was also a barbecue, a bottle grab, jumble, plants, books, bric-a-brac, toys, soft toys and second hand uniforms for sale.
