TAKING it slow in physical activities is becoming very popular as Wiltshire Council is looking to get more people involved in walking sports.

New walking netball groups have launched in Devizes and Tisbury, with two more planned in Calne and Marlborough.

Groups are already up-and-running in Corsham, Melksham, Salisbury, Trowbridge and Tidworth, all hosted by trained volunteers.

The volunteers welcome new participants, arrange social activities and encourage a diverse range of individuals to take part.

That includes people with physical and learning disabilities and dementia. - the oldest player is 83.

Since its launch in 2016, more than 200 people have tried walking netball in Wiltshire.

John Thomson, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for leisure, said: "Walking netball is growing increasingly popular across the county and that would not happen without the dedication and passion of our volunteer hosts.

"They make sure that every individual that attends feels welcome and part of a team. A significant number of players have had positive improvements to their lives since attending walking netball, whether that be through making friendships, gaining confidence or improved health."

In another boost for the sport, the volunteers who run Wiltshire Council’s walking netball groups took the prize for inclusion and diversity at the England Netball Goalden Globe regional awards held at Taunton School.

They now have a shot at a national honour when England Netball stages its annual awards in Nottingham later in the year.
