GROUPS of drunk men are causing a nuisance in Westbury Gardens in Bradford on Avon.

The town council says it has had complaints from local residents about shouting, swearing and other anti-social behaviour.

And town clerk Sandra Bartlett was forced to dial 999 on Monday after people complained about a group of men causing a disturbance in the gardens next to the River Avon.

She said: “It is becoming a regular occurrence.

“There are a number of men drinking in Westbury Gardens most days since the weather has been dry.

“We have very recently started getting complaints.”

The council said police were called to provide assistance to remove the men from the gardens on Monday afternoon.

A spokesman added: “The town council is becoming increasingly concerned about the frequency of reports regarding anti-social behaviour in Westbury Gardens, which seems mainly fuelled by alcohol consumption.

“This outdoor space has been designed to be shared and enjoyed, safely, by all. The majority of visitors to the garden do so with great respect.

“Older residents, those with young families/children and dog walkers are amongst the many who enjoy this usually peaceful and scenic spot.

“We expect everyone to respect the gardens, each other and behave appropriately, and are working with the police to address instances where this is not the case.

“In the meantime, we advise visitors not to approach anyone engaging in anti-social behaviour, and to instead call the police on 101 to report it, or 999 in an emergency.”
