A LODGE in Trowbridge that gives homeless people and unemployed youngsters a roof over their head has been significantly spruced up thanks to a team of volunteers.

Virgin Media employee, Hannah Dando, says her company allows one day a year where they can volunteer in the local community to help a worthwhile cause.

After months of preparation, Hannah, a team of 20 Virgin employees, including some electricians, and some of the residents renovated and refurbished Amber Lodge, Bythesea Road, by recarpeting the place, painting walls and redecorating the games room.

Virgin Media also gave them a new TV and a free internet and TV service for the year.

“It was a really good and fulfilling day. All the residents got involved and they were so grateful for our help,” she said.

“It was a full-on day but all our hard work paid off.

“It was sort of like the 60 minute makeover show, except it took quite a bit longer than that.

“Virgin Media do this volunteer day every year and I leapt at the chance to try and help a local cause.

“After a search, I chose the Amber Foundation as I felt we could make a real difference there and I think we have which is great.

“We had some electricians who we use come down for free which was very handy.”

For people who did not help with the refurbishment work, they helped put together a barbecue for all of the volunteers.

“The barbecue went down really well for our dedicated workers,” said Ms Dando.

“Everyone chipped in throughout the day, be it preparing the food or helping with the house. It was a real team effort.

“When I contacted the Amber Foundation to do this, they were so enthusiastic and welcoming.

“After it was completed, they were so thrilled with what we had done. Maybe we will work with them again in the future.”

Barty Smith founded the Amber Foundation more than 20 years ago after noticing a need for a place where young people could rebuild their self-belief and help them find a positive direction and focus for their future.

The Amber Foundation gives young people in crisis a safe, temporary home whilst supporting them to develop the skills needed for independent living and employment.
