A CAR, bank cards and a designer watch were stolen in a burglary in Trowbridge in the early hours of Monday morning.

The break-in took place at a house in Alderton Way sometime between midnight and 4am, where the perpetrators entered through an unlocked front door and stole a number of valuable items.

They included bank cards, a designer watch, a set of car keys and a red Volkswagen UP which was parked outside.

PC Sarah Greenman, from the Community Tasking Team, said: "We are appealing for the public's help and asking for people to come forward if they have any information which could help our investigation.

"We believe the burglary happened between midnight and 4am so if you were in the area between these times and witnessed anything suspicious, or have any CCTV or dash cam footage then please get in touch.

"Please contact Wiltshire Police on 101 and quote crime reference number 54180078527. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. "

The police are also issuing the following crime prevention advice for people to ensure their homes and their belongings are safe:

- Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even if you're in the garden, and make sure you have approved locks or bolts on all doors and windows

- Never leave a spare key in a hiding place like in a plant pot or letterbox - a thief knows all the hiding places

- Keep all keys, purses and wallets out of sight and away from the main points of entry

- Consider installing a burglar alarm, and only use a company that is registered or certified with the NSI or the SSIAB

- Make sure that you have up to date contents insurance

- Trim back any plants and hedges at the front of your property to no higher than 1 metre to remove hiding places

- Always report any suspicious activity, note any vehicle registrations, descriptions of persons involved and direction of travel

- Use a timer to set lights to mimic your usual activity when you are not at home

- Make sure any bolts are low enough so they cannot be opened by reaching over the top of the gate.
