GARDENING and cooking enthusiasts were treated to a memorable day on Saturday for the Gloucester Road Allotments’ annual show in Trowbridge.

Dozens competed against each other to see who had grown the best fruit and vegetables, the best homemade cooked goods and the children posted their best entries too.

Close to 100 people came along to inspect residents’ entries, that included carrots, onions, potatoes, pumpkins and also Victoria sponges, home made jams, shortbread, chutneys and much more.

Organiser Valerie Fahey was delighted with how well the event went, as more people than ever took part.

“It was just a wonderful occasion for everybody involved,” she said.

“This was our 14th show and although I say it gets better every year, this one was one to remember.

“We had close to 30 people competing, up from 19 last year, and the quality was really high.

“We had Royal Horticultural Society judge Brian Messam, who lives in North Bradley, inspect the entries and he was very impressed by it all.

“If you name a fruit or vegetable, we probably had it on the day.”

On top of the growing side of things, there was a barbecue, a tombola, a sales table and some cream teas too.

“It was just a lovely family day out. The weather was kind to us and there was a great atmosphere around the place,” she said.

“The winner for the most overall points for the fruit and veg cup was Eva Hounsell, I got the cookery cup, Deborah Jones got the best in show fruit and veg prize and cookery. And in the children’s section nine-year-old Daisy Rose came first. I want to thank everyone who got involved to make this day very special.”

Trowbridge Mayor Dennis Drewett handed out the prizes. The day ended up raising £370 for the Gloucester Road Allotment Association and that will go towards replaces an old iron pipe that has corroded.
