WILTSHIRE Police have arrested a 19-year-old man on suspicion of burglary in connection with the theft of a silver BMW.

He is now in custody. The vehicle remains outstanding.

Earlier, police had appealed for information following a burglary in Trowbridge in which the silver BMW X1 was stolen.

The break-in happened at an address in Toucan Street in the early hours of Tuesday morning .

The offender or offenders entered the house through an unlocked door and stole items such as a wallet and petty cash.

They also stole a set of car keys and a silver BMW X1 which was parked outside. Enquiries are ongoing to locate the vehicle.

PC Sarah Greenman, from the Community Tasking Team, said: "We are appealing for the public's help and asking for people to come forward if they have any information which could help our investigation.

"We believe the burglary happened between 10.30pm and 3.15am, so if you were in the area between these times and witnessed anything suspicious, or have any CCTV or dash cam footage then please get in touch.

"Please call 101 and quote log number 36 of today. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Police have also issued crime prevention advice for people to ensure their homes and their belongings are safe:

  • Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even if you're in the garden, and make sure you have approved locks or bolts on all doors and windows

  • Never leave a spare key in a hiding place like in a plant pot or letterbox - a thief knows all the hiding places

  • Keep all keys, purses and wallets out of sight and away from the main points of entry

  • Consider installing a burglar alarm, and only use a company that is registered or certified with the NSI or the SSIAB

  • Make sure that you have up-to-date contents insurance

  • Trim back any plants and hedges at the front of your property to no higher than 1 metre to remove hiding places

  • Always report any suspicious activity, note any vehicle registrations, descriptions of persons involved and direction of travel

  • Use a timer to set lights to mimic your usual activity when you are not at home

  • Make sure any bolts are low enough so they cannot be opened by reaching over the top of the gate.
