YOUNG people in Wiltshire have the opportunity to attend local history-related activities over the Christmas holidays.

The Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre in Chippenham is hosting three activities on Thursday January 3, from 10am to 3.45pm.

  • Wicked Wiltshire runs from 10am to 11am and lets children discover all the gruesome, funny and interesting bits of Wiltshire history.
  • During the Going to Pot activity, children get to discover what the conservators at the history centre do, repair a pot and then take it home with them. This runs from 11.20am to 12.20pm.
  • The 12 days of a Wiltshire Christmas session runs from 1.30pm to 3.45pm. Children will find out about Christmas in Wiltshire 100 years ago, play old fashioned games, learn about the great snow storm of 1684 and take part in a Wiltshire Mummers play. Mince pies, drinks and seasonal fare will be served at 3pm.

Mike Marshman, county local studies librarian at Wiltshire County Council, said: "We believe that young people should experience the history of their communities, whether in schools, museums, on the internet or by being involved in activities like this.

"An appreciation of our history is important in our understanding of the present."

There is a small charge to cover the cost of materials. Wicked Wiltshire and Going to Pot are £1.50 each per session, or you can purchase a morning ticket for both events for £2.50.

It will cost £3 to attend 12 Days of a Wiltshire Christmas, or an all day ticket is £5.

Tickets are available from the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, Cocklebury Road, Chippenham. Telephone 01249 705500 or email localstudies@wiltshire.gov.uk.

These activities are especially suitable for children aged eight to 12 years old. Children under eight must be accompanied by their parent or guardian during the sessions.

Attendees are asked to arrive at the centre ten minutes before the start of an activity to allow time for registration.
