A PENSIONER riding a bicycle was killed this morning following a crash in Sutton Benger near Chippenham.

Frederick Roberts, 85, was well known locally. His friends called him Fred.

Police closed the B4069 in both directions following the accident, in which Mr Roberts' bike was in collision with a Vauxhall Astra while he was cycling along the stretch of road.

Mr Roberts, of Oakhurst, Langley Burrell was rushed to the Royal United Hospital in Bath but died of his injuries.

The incident happened at around 8am and police were advising motorists to steer clear of the area for several hours.

A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Three cyclist dead on Wiltshire roads in the first week of the new year. We really do have some of the safest roads in the country - not. Condolances to all the families concerned.

The whole problem is that he should have been on a nice safe cycle track - oh, silly me, the money for building that was spent on traveller's camps.

I have known Mr Roberts ( Fred ) since I was $ years old, 40+ years. He was a very nice man and His sad death has hit us all hard. It is time the speed limit along that stretch of road was reduced. to hope fully prevent another tragedy. Our condolences go to his Daughter, Son and families.

So Walter, nothing to do with the cars speed or whether it was being driven dangerously then? Take your fight elsewhere, this is hardly the place. Condolences to the family of the poor man.

I collect news stories about cyclists getting killed and injured, and this area of England has been about 70% of my feed since 01/01/08. Something is terribly wrong all of a sudden here, and somebody closer to the story than me, here in Texas, needs to look at it.What has changed in the last few weeks or months to cause this sudden increase in car/bike wrecks?
